Cuddy + Feder Partner and Cannabis Law Practice Chair Kristen Motel recently spoke with The Real Deal about the growing presence of cannabis dispensaries in New York’s commercial real estate market.
Once viewed by many landlords as an uncertain or higher-risk tenant, licensed cannabis operators are increasingly moving into traditional retail locations formerly occupied by restaurants, banks, grocers, and other businesses. Competition for locations that meet state and local requirements, along with zoning and other regulatory restrictions, is shaping where dispensaries can locate and how operators evaluate potential sites.
Kristen discussed some of the considerations involved in cannabis real estate transactions, including the appeal of certain existing retail features and the limited supply of locations that satisfy state and local siting requirements.
Kristen chairs Cuddy + Feder’s Cannabis Law practice, where she works with clients on licensing, zoning, municipal review, environmental, and regulatory matters affecting New York’s cannabis industry.
